bullet The Iraqi Minister of Finance Mr. Kamil al-Gailani announced the release of the Iraqi Budget for 2004. The budget provides authority for the commitment and expenditure of money by the Iraqi Ministries for 2004 and sets the fiscal framework for 2005 and 2006. It meets the recurrent expenditures of the Ministries and provides for Iraqis' most urgent daily and social needs. (CPA)

bullet Starting Oct. 15, a new national currency known as the 'new Iraqi dinar' will begin to replace the existing currency. The new Iraqi dinar will create a single unified currency that is used throughout all of Iraq and will also make money more convenient to use in people's everyday lives. The Coalition Provisional Authority has released a fact sheet providing details about the new currency. (CPA)

bullet The "Core Group on Iraq" — the United Arab Emirates, U.S., European Union, and Japan — along with the UN, World Bank, and IMF, met last week to prepare for the Iraq Donor Conference to be held in Madrid, Spain, Oct. 23-24. Participants assessed Iraq's reconstruction needs, covering 14 priority sectors and three "cross-cutting" issues. The Conference's objectives will be to endorse the assessment, provide a forum for donors to pledge assistance, and agree on a multilateral framework for assistance. (World Bank, United Nations)

bullet The Fatima Zahra Center for Women's Rights in the town of Al Hillah, Babil Governorate, officially opened last week with a ceremony attended by the Governor of Babil and representatives of the Hillah Human Rights Society, USAID, and the Coalition Provisional Authority, as well as 100 Iraqi women. The center will offer area women opportunities to participate in educational programs, learn new job skills, and engage in income generation projects. (USAID)
